replace, substitute
这两个词都可以作“代替”解。replace只能用作及物动词，侧重表示以新的或好的替代原来的；substitute比较正式，表示“用…替代”，不含以好替坏之义。试比较：
She is inefficient and must be replaced. 她不称职，必须撤换。
A deputy substituted for the manager who was unable to attend. 经理不能出席，一个副手代替他。
